Irmo built out fast through the 1980s and 90s as Columbia's suburbs pushed toward Lake Murray, and most of the housing here is slab or basic crawlspace construction with builder grade oak or engineered flooring original to the house. Being close to the lake means the air carries more moisture most of the year than it does out east of downtown, and that shows up in floors that were installed without much thought to acclimation.

Subdivisions off St. Andrews Road and around Crooked Creek see a fair amount of engineered wood since it handles the lake humidity better than solid strip in some of these tighter, newer builds.
